2022 is spending its final days in our world. It was a year full of political shifts and economic concerns around the world. From the very north to the furthest south, every area on Earth was impacted by the biggest world headline for the year which is climate change. In addition, the world returned to face the ghosts of inflation once again. Moreover, Coronavirus gave the world its sister mutation, Omicron. On the other hand, Monkeypox rose to send the people once again fears of another pandemic.

As 2022 is approaching its end, SEE presents a photo tour of the top 2022 events.

Russian-Ukrainian War

On February 24, the Russian military operation in Ukraine started as Russia set different attacks against Ukraine, and crossed the borders.

Bombing Linking Bridge between Russia and Crimea

On 8 October 2022, the linking bridge between Russia and Crimea.

Pakistan Floods

From 14 June to October 2022, floods in Pakistan killed 1,739 people. 

California Wildfires 

The 2022 California wildfire was a series of wildfires that took place between January and October. By the end of the year, a total of 7,641 fires had been recorded.

Shinzo Abe's Assassination

Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was assassinated on July 8 in a political campaign event.

Coronavirus Measures Lifted 

In 2022, the majority of countries around the world lifted the restrictions of Coronavirus including social distancing and face masks. 

Liz Truss Becomes Shortest Reigning UK Prime Minister

Liz Truss became the shortest-serving former prime minister as she resigned after seven weeks. 

She was the only Prime Minister in the history of the UK to serve two monarchs since Winston Churchill.

Truss was appointed as Prime Minister a few days before the death of Queen Elizabeth II, and witnessed the accession of King Charles III.

Iran Protests 

Protests have been raging across Iran since September 16 after forces killed Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish-Iranian woman, in custody for not wearing her hijab properly.

The Rise of Monkeypox & Omicron

By the beginning of 2022, cases of Monkeypox started to flow in different countries around the world, reaching 110 countries by May.

WHO didn’t classify the virus as a pandemic, and named it as moderate. WHO recorded 82,828 confirmed cases of the virus until December 15.

NASA Successfully Launches Artemis I

NASA launched the Artemis I mission on November 16 from Kennedy Space Center in Florida after a number of failed attempts.

Protests in Seri Lanka

On March 15, mass protests erupted in Seri Lanka after the surge of prices and the fall of the economy.

Former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva defeated the incumbent Jair Bolsonaro in the second-round election on October 30.

More than 130 people were killed as they rushed to exit a stadium in East Java in one of the world's worst sports disasters. 

US Supreme Court Overturns Roe v. Wade

The U.S. Supreme Court has overturned the constitutional right to an abortion, reversing Roe v. Wade on July 24.

Sherine Abu Akleh Assassination 

Iconic Palestinian journalist and reporter Shireen Abu Akleh was assassinated on May 11.

The Platinum Jubilee of Elizabeth II was the international celebration in 2022 marking the 70th anniversary of the accession of Queen Elizabeth II on 6 February 1952, the first British monarch to ever celebrate one. The celebrations took place from February 6 to June 5. 

Karim Benzema Wins Ballon d'Or

Benzema won his first Ballon d'Or in 2022 after his breathtaking performance with Real Madrid and became the first French player to catch the prize since Zinedine Zidane in 1998. 

Elon Musk Overtakes Twitter

Elon Musk’s deal to purchase the world’s top social media platform, Twitter, was a trending topic through 2022. Musk set huge arguments with Twitter over spam accounts, bots, and freedom of speech.

This chaos was followed by Musk surrendering the deal, before finalizing it.

Amber Heard & Johnny Depp Trial

The Hollywood stars were the central topic of gossip in 2022 due to their legal dispute, and trial that was aired for the audience.

Depp sued his ex-wife Heard in March 2019 for $50 million over a 2018 Washington Post op-ed under Heard’s byline.

However, in his filings and repeatedly on the stand during the trial earlier this year, he declared he was the one who was abused in the couple’s relationship.

The trials took place between April 11 and June 1.

Chinese President Xi Jinping Secured Historic Third Term

On Sunday, the current Chinese President Xi Jinping secured a historic third term as the leader of the Communist Party and the state.

He was described by his allies as the most powerful leader of the country since Mao Zedong.

Queen Elizabeth II Death

On September 8, Queen Elizabeth passed away at the age of 96, declaring King Charles III as the new UK king.

More than 4 billion people around the world watched the funeral of her majesty.  

Will Smith Slaps Chris Rock

On March 27 and before Will Smith picked up his Oscar for best actor, comedian Chris Rock made a joke at wife Jada's expense which drove Smith to go to the stage and smack Rock.

Russia Annexes Four Ukrainian Regions

On September 30, Vladimir Putin signed “accession treaties” formalizing Russia's illegal annexation of four occupied regions in Ukraine.

Giorgia Meloni Appointed as Italy's 1st Women Prime Minister 

Giorgia Meloni is an Italian politician who has been serving as the Prime Minister of Italy since 22 October, the first woman to hold this position.

King Charles III Accession 1st Televized Event

On September 10, Charles III acceded to the throne of the United Kingdom and the thrones of the other Commonwealth realms upon the death of his mother, Elizabeth II.

Jeddah Security and Development Summit

Jeddah Security and Development Summit was held on the 16th of July, 2022 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The respective leaders of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the United States of America participated in the joint summit.

All the gulf leaders welcomed President Joe Biden and reaffirmed the significant role played by the United States in their decades-long strategic partnerships in the Middle East.

COP 27 in Sharm El Sheikh

Egypt hosted COP 27 when important memorandums were signed including a fund for loss and waste. The event took place between November 6 to 18.

James Webb Space Telescope Releases 1st Image for Universe

The first Webb image the world saw is of a galaxy cluster known to astronomers as SMACS 0723 (opens in new tab). It lies in the southern hemisphere sky and is 5.12 billion light-years from Earth. The photo was released on July 14.

NASA Successfully Altered an Asteroid's Orbit

In a successful attempt to alter the orbit of an asteroid for the first time in history, NASA crashed a spacecraft into the asteroid Dimorphos on Sept. 26, 2022.

Roger Federer Retires 

Tennis icon Roger Federer announced his decision to retire from tennis, after confirming that his recovery from right knee surgery. He announced the decision on September 15.

Morrocan Rayan Tragedy

The five-year-old boy trapped in a dry, 104-foot well for more than four days was pulled out Saturday after a painstaking but ultimately unsuccessful rescue effort that transfixed the world.

His death was announced on February 5.

Rishi Sunak 1st Asian UK Prime Minister

On October 25, Rishi Sunak became the first Asian UK Prime Minister in the history of the UK.

FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022

The FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 took place November 20 to December 18. 32 teams competed across 64 matches in the 22nd edition. It was the first FIFA World Cup event to take place in Winter.

 

Rare Ring of Fire (Solar Eclipse)

On October 25, a rare solar eclipse took place and it was visible in Western Siberia Central Asia, Western Asia, South Asia, and from the northeast of Africa, but not in North America.

At its maximum point in Russia, 82 percent of the Sun was covered, and it appeared around 15 to 30 percent eclipsed in Western Europe.

Kate Middleton Becomes 1st Princess of Wales since Diana

On September 20, Kate Middleton became the first Princess of Wales since Princess Diana.

Winter Olympic Games 

The 2022 Winter Olympics were held in Beijing, China, making it the first city ever to host both the Summer Olympics and Winter Olympics. The event took place between February 4 to 20. 

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck's Marriage 

On 17 Julythe marriage of American star Jennifer Lopez, and American actor Ben Affleck, in Las Vegas, three months after their engagement took place. 

Halloween Crash in South Korea 

More than 158 people died in a crush among huge Halloween crowds in a popular nightlife area of South Korea's capital, Seoul, on October 29. 

Argentina World Champions 

The whole world supported Argentina and Messi to hold the golden cup. The majority of football lovers hoped and prayed for Messi to catch the final milestone he failed to achieve in the past few years.
