Hurricane Lee made landfall with powerful winds in the far northwest parts of Nova Scotia province, Canada, on Saturday, causing streets to flood, trees to fall, and power outages affecting tens of thousands along the northern Atlantic coast.

At least one fatality has been linked to Hurricane Lee, with reports of a motorcyclist in the US state of Maine tragically losing their life after a tree fell on their bike, according to local media.

The latest update from the US National Hurricane Center indicates that Lee is moving northward after making landfall on Long Island, a small island southwest of Halifax, on Saturday.

Meteorologists have stated that the hurricane, which remains strong with maximum sustained winds reaching up to 100 kilometers per hour, could potentially intensify further.

The hurricane has caused coastal flooding and heavy rainfall across parts of Maine and the Canadian Atlantic region.

In the Canadian province of Nova Scotia, about 120,000 people experienced power outages on Saturday as fallen trees, due to the strong winds, damaged power lines.

In the neighboring province of New Brunswick, around 20,000 residents suffered power outages.

As a precautionary measure, the administration of US President Joe Biden has declared a state of emergency for the states of Maine and Massachusetts, allowing for federal assistance.
