November 25 marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, designed by the UN General Assembly to raise awareness of the fact that women around the world are subjected to all forms of violence, as a way to put an end to this drastic phenomenon.

Despite the major developments witnessed by the status of women internationally for decades, yet gender-based violence (GBV) or violence against women remains a stain on humanity.

According to UN reports, a third of all women and girls experience physical or sexual abuse in their lifetime. Moreover, around 87,000 women were killed worldwide in 2017, half of them by relatives.

Violence against women and girls takes many different forms including physical, sexual, and emotional abuse.

In this article, let us have an in-depth analysis into the causes behind this phenomenon:

  • The society’s racist view against women; they are constantly marginalized.

  • Social customs and traditions, as well as the stereotyped image of women as weak creatures, who always need permanent control and jurisdiction.

  • Lack of adequate awareness about the horrific consequences of this phenomenon.

  • Racism and discrimination between men and women.

  • Increasing rates of harassment and rape cases in the society.

  • The existence of economic, educational differences between men and women.

  • Lack of legislation, and strict penalties for perpetrators of violence against women.
