German Finance Minister Christian Lindner said that Germany cannot do without Russian gas "for the time being" and that the sanctions imposed on Moscow in this sector will harm Europe more than Russia.
"We should look at imposing tough sanctions, but for now, Russian gas supplies cannot be replaced," Lindner said in Luxembourg before a meeting with his EU counterparts.
The minister added that cutting the Russian supplies of gas "would hurt Germany more than Russia."
Before the Russian military operation in Ukraine, which was launched on the twenty-fourth of last February, the European Union imported 40% of its gas needs from Russia, and Germany was the most dependent on Russian gas, which represents 55% of its consumption.
