Actress Gal Gadot shared an update about her starring role in the upcoming historical movie “Cleopatra”.
During her cover story with InStyle magazine, the "Wonder Woman" star opened up about her role as the legendary queen of Egypt.
The actress pointed out that she watched all the Cleopatra movies throughout history, noting: "I feel like we’re telling the story the world needs to hear now,”.
Gadot added that the movie will not only depict how appealing, strategic, and smart she was but would also highlight how much impact she had and still has on the world today.
“I can’t reveal a lot, but I can tell you that we’re going to celebrate the Cleopatra story," she stated.
The Egyptian queen has been a frequent subject of Hollywood movies, in which Claudette Colbert and Elizabeth Taylor’s takes are the most popular ones.
In addition, Lyndsey Marshal played Cleopatra in the HBO series “Rome”.
The movie was first announced in December 2020. It generated controversy due to Gadot’s casting as the historic queen.
The actress addressed the outrage around her casting as Cleopatra in a December 2020 interview with BBC Arabic.
“First of all, if you want to be true to the facts then Cleopatra was Macedonian. We were looking for a Macedonian actress that could fit Cleopatra. She wasn’t there, and I was very passionate about Cleopatra," she noted.
"I want to celebrate the legacy of Cleopatra and honor this amazing historic icon that I admire so much. You know, anybody can make this movie, and anybody can go ahead and do it. I’m very passionate that I’m going to do my own too,” Gadot continued.
The movie is helmed by “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” filmmaker Kari Skogland and scripted by Laeta Klogridis.
Klogridis is also set to serve as an executive producer. Producers also include Jenkins, Gadot, Chuck Roven, and Jaron Varsano. Paramount Pictures is the studio behind the movie.
The studio won the rights to the project last year, beating out Apple, Universal, Warner Bros., and Netflix.
