The G20 has agreed for the first time that member states will work together to reform the United Nations, the World Trade Organization and multilateral lending institutions, a significant step that follows a month and a half of negotiations.
G20 foreign ministers are expected to call for these reforms at a meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly on Wednesday.
A draft communique to be released at the meeting said there was a growing recognition of the need to reform the UN, Bretton Woods institutions and the World Trade Organization.
The communique stressed that these institutions must modernize their governance structures and practices and improve their ability to address the range of political, social and economic challenges facing the world.
