French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot stated that lifting sanctions and initiating reconstruction in Syria must be contingent on political and security commitments.
Barrot announced that France will host a meeting in January on Syria, bringing together Arab, Turkish, and Western partners. He emphasized the importance of maintaining Kurdish partners in northeastern Syria and ensuring their rights.
Meanwhile, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, called for a reassessment of EU sanctions on certain sectors to facilitate Syria’s reconstruction.
In a speech to the European Parliament in Strasbourg, von der Leyen remarked that "old Syria has vanished, but a new Syria has yet to be born," describing the fall of the regime as a liberation for Syrians.
The UN Security Council has also called for the implementation of an "inclusive, Syrian-led political process" to address the ongoing crisis
