France, Britain, and Germany have moved to reimpose international sanctions on Iran, according to a report by Reuters. The decision follows a meeting between the so-called European troika and Iranian officials earlier this week, which failed to deliver sufficient commitments from Tehran on its nuclear program.
The three European powers, who were original signatories to the 2015 nuclear deal designed to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon, announced they will trigger the “snapback” mechanism that restores sanctions previously lifted under the agreement.
Diplomats explained that the move comes amid ongoing accusations that Iran has violated key provisions of the 2015 accord, particularly in relation to uranium enrichment and transparency measures. Without concrete progress, the troika opted to reimpose sanctions rather than risk losing their authority to do so when their mandate expires in mid-October.
European foreign ministers briefed US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on their decision on Wednesday, and are expected to formally notify the United Nations Security Council on Thursday. This will initiate the official process of reinstating sanctions against Tehran.
