Former South Korean Prime Minister Han Duck-soo officially announced his candidacy for the presidency on Friday, setting the stage for a high-stakes election just one month away.

Han’s entry into the race follows his resignation as acting president and prime minister, marking a strategic move as South Korea prepares for its June 3 vote to elect a new head of state.

Han declared his campaign at the National Assembly in Seoul, one day after stepping down from his interim leadership role. His decision to run comes amid a tense political atmosphere following the impeachment of former President Yoon Suk-yeol, who was stripped of office by the Constitutional Court in April.

With a long career spanning both liberal and conservative administrations, Han has served as prime minister under two presidents and was once South Korea’s ambassador to the United States. This broad experience has positioned him as the leading conservative contender in the upcoming election.

He is expected to face off against Lee Jae-myung, the presidential nominee of the liberal Democratic Party and a prominent figure in progressive politics. The race is anticipated to draw intense national and international attention as South Korea seeks stability after months of political upheaval.

Political analysts say Han’s centrist appeal and diplomatic background could help sway undecided voters looking for a steady hand in a post-impeachment political landscape.

The June election will be pivotal in shaping the country’s direction on issues ranging from economic reform to foreign policy.
