A number of Egyptian governorates' citizens, including Alexandria, Port Said, Damietta, Sharkia, Beni Suef, Suez, and Gharbia, launched a boycott campaign called “Let It Rot” for an entire month, in order to boycott fish whose price exceeded the reasonable limit.

Several other governorates joined this initiative. Port Said in particular succeeded in reaping the benefits of this boycott, which in turn led to reducing fish prices by up to 50%.

Activists on social media explained that there is no justification for increasing fish prices to this extent, as the price of tilapia fish exceeded 180 pounds per kilo, and this is what prompted citizens to respond to this initiative.

The aim of the fish boycott campaign was to fight high prices, reduce the greed of some traders, and take into account the Egyptian citizen, especially the ordinary citizen.

The current lack of demand for buying fish has caused huge losses, and this is what led to the price of tilapia fish falling from 180 pounds to only 80 pounds.

The price of catfish also decreased from 120 pounds to 60 pounds, which is approximately 50%.

Today, prices have decreased significantly for citizens, as the price of large mullet recorded at 80 pounds, and tilapia, the largest size weighing two kilograms, cost 60 pounds, after recording 120 pound ahead of the boycott.

The prices of  fish came as follows:

The price of 1 tilapia fish ranges between 66 and 68 pounds

The price of tilapia fillet ranges between 50 and 250 pounds

The price of a kilo of local whites ranges between 90 and 130 pounds

The price of a kilo of frozen fish and pasta ranges between 30 and 50 pounds

The price of a kilo of squid calamari ranges between 180 and 400 pounds

The price of mullet ranges between 110 and 260 pounds

The price of jumbo shrimp ranges between 530 and 650 pounds

The average price of shrimp ranges between 460 and 520 pounds
