International Federation of Association Football (Fifa) issued a statement on Tuesday commenting on the racist abuse aimed at England players during their clash versus Bulgaria at Euro 2020 qualifier in Sofia.

England’s black players were subjected to racist abuse from Bulgaria’s fans during England’s 6-0 victory over the Lions on Monday.

The most prominent players, who were subjected to racist abuse, were Raheem Shaquille Sterling, and Tyrone Mings.

Fifa said that it could impose international sanctions on continental or international federations involved in racist abuses.

"Following changes made to its Disciplinary Code in June 2019, FIFA may extend worldwide any sanctions that a confederation or member association imposes for racist incidents," the statement read.

Fifa also asserted that it is waiting for the results of Uefa investigations regarding that matter.

"FIFA, therefore, expects to be informed as soon as practicable regarding the relevant decisions of the UEFA disciplinary bodies in relation to this particular case. This would allow any sanctions imposed to be extended worldwide," the statement explained.

On his part, FIFA President Gianni Infantino said that there is no place for racism in football, adding that they are still facing challenges to eliminate such phenomenon.

"So many times we say there is no place for racism in football, but nonetheless we still face challenges to tackle this problem in our sport, as we do in society," Infantino said according to Fifa's official website.

"We will need the support of public authorities to help us identify and punish the culprits but we probably also need to think more broadly on what we can do to fix this," he added.

Noteworthy, the president of the Bulgarian Football Union Borislav Mikhailov resigned after following these abuses.
