Powerful explosions shook Venezuela's capital, Caracas, in the early hours of Saturday, accompanied by a roaring sound likened to aircraft flying overhead.

According to correspondents from Agence France-Presse (AFP), the sounds began at around 2:00 a.m. local time and continued for several hours.

As of 6:15 a.m. GMT, the explosions were still being heard.

Witnesses cited by Reuters reported loud noises across Caracas during the early morning hours, noting that parts of the southern area of the city, near a major military base, were left without electricity.

The security developments come at a time of heightened tension in the Caribbean region, following threats by US President Donald Trump to carry out strikes against Venezuela as part of broader political and economic pressure on the government of President Nicolás Maduro.
