Temperatures are three times hotter in parts of Texas, USA, and the intense humidity makes it hotter, even after the sun goes down.

Warnings have been issued to millions of people of high temperatures, and this has caused many deaths so far.

Temperatures peaked at 48 degrees Celsius, breaking countless temperature records across the state. More of them are expected to be broken during the next week as the heat wave expands to the north and east.

The unusually high temperatures were caused by a ridge of high pressure over the southern United States called a "heat dome," which occurs when the atmosphere traps hot ocean air like a blanket.

In the short term, other factors are also contributing, says John Nielsen-Gammon, a Texas climatologist and director of the Southern Regional Climate Center at Texas A&M University: "The Gulf of Mexico is extraordinarily warm ... It's also around the time of Summer Solstice".
