Within the framework of the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities’ keenness to preserve Egypt’s cultural and civilizational heritage and improve the tourist experience in museums and archaeological sites, experts completed the first phase of the project of interpreting and displaying archaeological sites registered on the UNESCO World Heritage List on Al-Muizz Street in Historic Cairo.
This project was implemented in cooperation with the UNESCO Office in Cairo.
Dr. Mustafa Waziri, Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, stressed the importance of this project because it will make visitors enjoy viewing and learning more about World Heritage sites.
The project provides comprehensive information about each site through the installation of a set of informational and informational panels at the archaeological sites on Al-Muizz Street IN Cairo.
Sites in Historical Cairo are registered on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The project provides umbrellas and wooden benches along the street for the comfort of visitors.
For his part, Dr. Bassem Ibrahim, Director General of the General Administration of Services for Archaeological Sites and Museums, said that the first phase of the project included the design, implementation, and installation of 40 information panels for 14 archaeological sites on Al-Muizz Street, and a map of the street and its archaeological sites provided with a code (Qr Code) for each monument on the street that visitors can through it.
The visitor can learn about each site in terms of information, history, and architectural design, in addition to a group of archival pictures drawn by orientalists during the beginning of the last century.
Another similar map of all World Heritage sites in Historic Cairo was designed and implemented, which was placed at Bab al-Futouh in northern Cairo.
Dr. Ibrahim added that during the coming period, the implementation of the second phase of the project will begin, which includes the implementation of more than 70 information and guidance panels for the rest of the archaeological buildings located on Al-Muizz Street.
It should be noted that the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities launched last September, in cooperation with the UNESCO office in Cairo, the guide for interpreting and displaying cultural heritage sites in Egypt.
The guide consists of four parts that review the principles of managing cultural heritage sites in Egypt, the principles of interpreting them and making them available to visitors, the design standards for information signs, and the design standards for visitor centers.
