Netflix, the world's leading internet entertainment service, has announced in May 2019, its new original series from the Middle East called "Ma Waraa Al Tabiaa" (The Paranormal).
It will co-star, Egyptian actor and writer, Ahmed Amin Najm as the protagonist (Rifaat Ismail), which will be written and directed by Amr Salama and produced by producer Mohamed Hefzy.
"Najm brings a level of authenticity and an incredible on-screen presence, thus, we felt that he was the most suitable for the portrayal of Dr. Refaat Ismail," said Salama.
He continued: "With such a strong cast paired with stunning special effects, we can't wait to get the production underway."
It will be Netflix's first Egyptian series and its third Middle East original series following "Jinn" and "Al Rawabi School for Girls".
The series is based on horror/thriller novels "Ma Waraa Al Tabiaa" (The Paranormal) by Ahmed Khaled Tawfik, late renowned Egyptian novelist, known for his contributions to Arab horror, which has sold more than 15 million copies.
The plot revolves around the adventures of Ismail, a hematologist, who narrates how he confronted a series of supernatural events that he was exposed to in the 1960s in Egypt.
The series shooting will begin in November.
Najm's casting had sparked controversy on social media as many people cast their doubts over his ability to play the role.
Egyptian actress-singer, Heba Magdi was eyed for a role in the series, however, she was excluded after news outlets announced her participation in the series, which went against the company's wishes to announce the rest of its cast over an extended period.
The series will feature stunning supernatural scenes with powerful techniques and special effects that complement the actors' outstanding performance.
It is reported that the series will be presented in a six 60-Minutes episode.
