In an announcement that could significantly impact Israel’s settlement policy, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot indicated on Monday that the European Union (EU) is likely to impose additional sanctions soon against radical Israeli settlers accused of violent acts against Palestinian communities in the West Bank.
This move aligns with recent EU efforts to address what it sees as growing provocations by settler groups in contested regions.
Barrot explained that France has already enacted sanctions at a national level against individuals linked to such violent acts.
At the same time, the EU has also implemented penalties through its collective sanction framework, which has been activated twice and could be enacted a third time soon.
This step comes amid a period of heightened tensions in the West Bank, where conflicts between settlers and Palestinian residents have intensified, leading to loss of life, property damage, and heightened scrutiny from international observers.
According to human rights organizations, recent months have seen an uptick in violence from settler groups, particularly in regions where expanding settlements encroach on Palestinian lands.
The Israeli government has faced increasing international pressure to curb the expansion of settlements, which the EU and United Nations have repeatedly condemned as violations of international law.
The EU maintains that these settlements undermine peace efforts and hinder the prospect of a two-state solution by creating facts on the ground that complicate negotiations for a sustainable resolution.
