European Union ambassadors have approved a new package of sanctions on Belarus as the bloc tries to crack down on Russia's circumvention of sanctions imposed over its invasion of Ukraine.
“With this package, we increase pressure on both countries and make our sanctions against Russia more effective,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen explained in a post on the X website.
The new package focuses mostly on goods that can be used for military purposes, but falls short of fully aligning sanctions with those imposed on Russia. Moscow maintains a customs union with Belarus.
The bloc last week approved the 14th package of sanctions on Russia, targeting Russia's shadow fleet of tankers and LNG transfers to third countries.
