Ethiopia has experienced a complete power outage following a major power grid failure, according to the official Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation.
The corporation confirmed that the competent authorities are working to repair the fault and gradually restore electricity supply to all parts of the country.
Ethiopia, with a population of 120 million, is the second most populous country in Africa. The country relies on a growing electricity grid, supported by mega projects such as the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, which began generating power in February 2022. In August of the same year, Ethiopia announced doubling its electricity production.
Ethiopia does not only meet its internal needs, but also sells electricity to neighboring countries, including Kenya, Sudan, and Djibouti. It has also signed agreements with countries such as South Sudan, Tanzania, and the breakaway region of Somaliland.
This sudden outage raises questions about the readiness of the infrastructure to meet the growing demand internally and externally, while the authorities are racing against time to fix the fault and restore service fully.
