The Embassy of Greece in Cairo, in cooperation with the Cairo Opera House and the Foreign Cultural Relations Sector of the Ministry of Culture of Egypt, is organizing the musical performance "The Rembetiko Music in Cairo".

The performance is part of the anniversary celebrations for the Greek National Day of 25 March 1821.

The event will be held at El Gomhouria Theater on Monday, 15 April 2024 at 7:00 PM. Admission is free and seating will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis. The doors will open at 5:30 PM.

Rebetiko is a significant genre of Greek music that emerged and prospered during the first half of the 20th century due to specific social and political circumstances.

It holds great importance as a symbol of identity for the Greek folk music tradition and is an essential part of the collective memory of the Greek people. Often referred to as a "Living Organism," Rebetiko has had a profound impact on Greek music and continues to influence it to this day.

In 2017, it was included in the Representative List of the Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
