Belgium's Queen Mathilde and Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Elizabeth, duchess of Brabant, and Egypt's Minister of Tourism and Antiques Ahmed Issa, along with Belgium Ambassador to Egypt François Cornet, inaugurated a temporary exhibition in the Baron Empain Palace in Heliopolis this week commemorating the 100th anniversary of the historic visit of Queen Elizabeth of the Belgians and her son Crown Prince Leopold to Egypt.

Entitled “1923-2023: Queen Elisabeth of Belgium in Egypt”, the photographic and film exhibition has been sponsored by the Belgian Royal Palace and the Belgian Embassy in Cairo in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities and will last from 14 March to 14 April this year.

The inauguration ceremony featured appearances by Professor Ghada Shalaby, Deputy Minister for Tourism Affairs, Dr. Mostafa Waziri, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, Professor Amr Al-Qadi, CEO of the Egyptian General Authority for Tourism Promotion, and Professor Ahmed Ebeid, Assistant Minister for Affairs of the Minister’s Office Sector.

The exhibition's photos and films show Queen Elizabeth and her son Leopold attending the official opening of Tutankhamun’s burial chamber in 1923.

The Minister of Tourism and Antiques and Queen Mathilde, and the Belgian ambassador toured the exhibition and the palace.

The exhibition illustrates the strong friendship between Egypt and Belgium, focusing on the Belgian queen’s journeys in 1923 and 1930, according to Issa.
