Egypt’s Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Karim Badawi, held talks with Nadja Håkansson, Chief Executive Officer of Thyssenkrupp Uhde, to explore ways to strengthen cooperation on carbon emissions reduction projects and green energy solutions, the ministry said on Wednesday.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the annual Baker Hughes conference in Florence, reflecting Egypt’s growing engagement with global energy and industrial technology leaders as it accelerates its energy transition agenda.

During the meeting, Badawi praised Thyssenkrupp’s global leadership in designing and building large-scale industrial complexes, particularly in the ammonia, methanol, petrochemicals, and refining sectors.

He stressed the importance of expanding cooperation on reducing carbon emissions at existing industrial facilities, highlighting Thyssenkrupp’s expertise in delivering advanced solutions that help lower the carbon footprint of heavy industries.

The two sides reviewed progress on their ongoing collaboration in Egypt’s first carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) project, currently under development at the MOPCO complex in Damietta, a project that is also the first of its kind in both Egypt and Africa.

Discussions also covered the transfer of Thyssenkrupp’s global expertise in green hydrogen and low-carbon ammonia to Egypt’s petroleum sector, in line with the country’s broader energy transition strategy.

On her part, Håkansson said Thyssenkrupp is proud of its partnership with Egypt’s petroleum sector, noting that the company has delivered more than 3,000 chemical processing plants worldwide.

She praised the cooperation with Egyptian MOPCO on the landmark carbon capture project, describing it as a reflection of Egypt’s leadership in adopting sustainable environmental solutions in the region.

Badawi extended an invitation to Håkansson to participate as a keynote speaker at the Egypt Energy Show (EGYPES) 2026, one of the region’s leading energy conferences.
