Ambassador Wael Badawi, Deputy Assistant Foreign Minister for Refugee Affairs, Immigration and Combating Human Trafficking reviewed the Egyptian state's efforts to receive and provide the necessary services to accommodate more than 10 million migrants and refugees, and the burdens it bears in this context, despite the economic challenges resulting from regional and international crises.
This came during Egypt’s participation in the Vienna Conference on Migration.
The ambassador confirmed Egypt's commitment to fulfilling its international obligations towards refugees and migrants, stressing the importance of adopting a comprehensive approach to migration issues that takes into account the balance between all the dimensions associated with them, the most important of which is the humanitarian and development dimension, dealing with the root causes leading to migration, and not only focusing on combating illegal migration, considering that migration can support development efforts in source, transit and destination countries.
He also noted the importance to activate the principle of responsibility and burden sharing between developed countries and countries receiving refugees.
