The Egyptian-Russian Foundation for culture and science published a glossary for nuclear energy technical terms in three languages; English, Russian and Arabic. The glossary was prepared by Dr Mohamed Mounir Megahed, vice chairman of the Nuclear Power Plants Authority (NPPA).
Megahed said that the nuclear energy plays a key role in facing two main challenges; providing electricity and fresh water.
“Nuclear energy has been used globally since late 1950s. Recently, many Arab states are rapidly moving towards nuclear energy, for example: the UAE has four nuclear power reactors under construction in Barakah,” he said. “In December 2017, Egypt and Russia have signed a contract for the construction of four nuclear power reactors in El-Dabaa.”
“Saudi Arabia has announced an ambitious plan to build 16 nuclear power plants by 2032; Jordan has signed a deal with Russia to build the Middle Eastern kingdom’s first nuclear power station, likely to be operational by 2023,” NPPA vice chairman added.
Moreover, Megahded stressed the need to localize nuclear technology in the Arab world. “Thus, issuing a nuclear energy terms glossary is an important step,” he said.
This glossary is published as a part of scientific publications and specialized series on nuclear energy issued by the foundation.
