Egypt has taken a major step toward becoming a regional energy hub, advancing an ambitious project aimed at exporting up to 3,000 megawatts of electricity to Europe through the Greek power grid.

The initiative underscores the deep strategic partnership between Cairo and Athens, while positioning Egypt as a critical bridge for energy exchange between Africa, Europe, and Asia.

A tripartite agreement was officially signed between the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC), operator of Egypt’s unified power grid; Greece’s Independent Power Transmission Operator (IPTO), responsible for the Greek electricity grid; and Elica, part of the Copelouzos Group, which oversees the project’s implementation.

The project forms a cornerstone of Egypt’s broader strategy to establish high-voltage interconnection with the European electricity network, marking a pivotal move toward transforming the country into a regional and international energy exchange hub. By linking its grid to Europe via Greece, Egypt aims to become a cross-continental energy corridor, facilitating the flow of electricity between the three surrounding regions.

Officials highlight that the interconnection is essential for supporting sustainable development goals, strengthening energy security, and enhancing the resilience of regional power systems.

A clear roadmap has been set for completing the project’s regulatory and technical procedures. Once operational, the Egypt–Greece electricity link will serve as an important gateway between the two countries, significantly supporting the integration of renewable energy into both nations’ power mixes.

With Egypt’s rapidly expanding solar and wind capacity, the interconnection promises major economic advantages for all involved parties, enabling Europe to access competitively priced clean energy while enhancing Egypt’s export revenues and energy market influence.

As global demand grows for reliable, sustainable electricity sources, the Egypt–Greece interconnection project stands out as a landmark in regional energy cooperation, one that strengthens bilateral ties, advances green transition goals, and reinforces Egypt’s role on the international energy map.
