Egypt and Russia, won with 5,568 and 5,118, respectively, of this year’s DV-2020 persity lottery, followed by the Democratic Republic of Congo (4,743 applicants selected), Iran (4,101), Nepal (3,696) and Sudan (3,691).
Winners were selected through a randomized computer drawing from over 14 million qualified entries received during the 34-day application period last year.
Noteworthy, the department published in its August 2019 Visa Bulletin the official statistical breakdown by country for Fiscal Year 2020 Diversity Immigrant Visa Program, which makes available up to 55,000 permanent resident visas, known as green cards to foreign citizens
On other hand, the visa lottery is one of the immigration programs that President Donald Trump has openly criticized. He has reported that the “worst of the worst” are selected in the cost-free process.
The Diversity Immigrant Visa program offers 50,000 green cards for those who are selected. The program was created to promote legal residence of citizens from countries with low rates of immigration to the United States.
