Egypt’s national handball team demolished Russia easily in their first game of the IHF 2021 World Cup Main Draw. The Pharaohs qualified to the Main Draw after finishing second in Group G, behind Sweden.

They were therefore put in the same group as the top three teams of Group H: Russia, Slovenia and Belarus.

Their first game was against a tough Russian side. The beginning of the encounter was a roller coaster, with goals coming back and fourth.

However, the hosts quickly dominated the game and started extending their lead, thanks to 10 goals between Egyptian handball legends, Ahmed El-Ahmar and Mohamed Mamdouh, the Pharaohs ended the first-half with a seven-point lead,15-8.

Egypt picked up where they left off in the second-half and continued their dominance and despite Russia’s efforts to reduce the cap, the game ended 28-22.

Ahmed El-Ahmar was given the Man of the Match Award following an impressive display; he struck the back of the net on six occasions.

Egypt will need to collect the most amount of points in order to qualify for the quarter-finals. Their upcoming game will be against a struggling Belarus side on January 22nd.
