Egypt has firmly secured its position as the third-largest global exporter of dried onions in 2024, capturing 12% of the global market share, according to the latest report from the Food Export Council.

The report highlighted Egypt’s growing dominance in the dried onion sector — including whole, chopped, sliced, and powdered forms,  with total exports reaching $66 million and a volume of 22,000 tons last year.

From 2020 to 2024, the country achieved an annual growth rate of 10% in value and 8% in volume, with a significant 37% surge in export value between 2023 and 2024 alone.

Germany led as Egypt’s top importer, accounting for 22% of the dried onion exports with $14 million, followed by the Netherlands with 17% ($12 million), Japan with 11% ($7 million), the United States at 9% ($6 million), and Indonesia also at 9% ($6 million).

Together, these five countries represented 69% of Egypt’s total dried onion exports, underscoring the global trust in the quality and competitiveness of Egyptian agricultural products.

The Food Export Council emphasized that this strong performance not only cements Egypt’s role in the global market for processed agricultural goods but also opens doors to new international markets. It supports the country’s broader strategy to increase exports and boost foreign currency revenues, reinforcing agriculture as a cornerstone of Egypt’s export economy.
