Egypt Plans to Boost its Cotton Production by 50%

Egypt's cotton production will rise by 50% in the next season, the Agriculture Ministry announced this week.

The ministry estimated that cotton production will have doubled by 2023, noting that the area harvested is forecast to grow to 350 feddans from 236 feddans.

"The government has encouraged farmers to plant cotton, corn, and other strategic crops," said the ministry.

They would be informing a range of farmers about the cultivation process after the seed has been commercially released.

It's worth mentioning that the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in partnership with the Egyptian Cotton Research Institute, Modern Nile Cotton launched the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) in 2019.

The initiative is under the framework of The Egyptian Cotton Project aimed at improving its quality and marketing.
