Egypt unveiled its first official auction platform for premium customer service numbers, marking a new step in the country’s push to modernize corporate communications and unlock new revenue streams from digital infrastructure.

The National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) announced the launch of “Auctions,” an online platform designed to allow companies and institutions to bid competitively on distinctive short customer service numbers, including rare three-digit and six-digit combinations that are easy for consumers to remember.

The move reflects growing demand among businesses for simplified communication channels, particularly as customer experience becomes a competitive differentiator across sectors ranging from retail to financial services.

Yasmina Alaa, Executive Director of Regulatory and Economic Policies at the NTRA, said the platform is the result of nearly a year of market research and policy preparation.

“The Egyptian government aims, through the Auctions platform, to facilitate access to premium short numbers for large companies, while also making six-digit numbers available for small and medium-sized enterprises,” Alaa told CNN Business. “Our studies showed strong and growing demand for distinctive numbers, and we concluded that this is the right time to launch competitive auctions.”

According to Alaa, the first auction is scheduled for January 26, and will feature a curated selection of highly memorable numbers, including rare three-digit combinations such as “777”, as well as six-digit premium numbers like “777000.”

The platform’s initial offerings will focus exclusively on customer service centers, allowing companies to bid on:

Six-digit premium numbers tailored to small businesses and the retail sector (e.g., 777666, 555777)

The introduction of Auctions is expected to significantly boost NTRA revenues derived from number allocation services. For the first time, three-digit premium numbers, previously unavailable in the Egyptian market, will be allocated through a transparent bidding process.

“The minimum starting bid for three-digit premium numbers has been set at EGP 220,000, while six-digit numbers will start at EGP 60,000,” Alaa said, noting that bidding increments will vary depending on the uniqueness and desirability of each number.

She added that revenue growth from number allocation is expected to “far exceed” current levels, particularly because three-digit numbers have historically been limited to emergency services and a small number of official hotlines, such as the NTRA’s own 155 number.

“In the Egyptian market, there are very few recognizable three-digit numbers outside of emergency services. This auction introduces an entirely new category,” Alaa explained.

Beyond revenue, officials say the platform addresses a long-standing gap between corporate needs and available telecom resources. Research conducted by the NTRA found that many companies struggle to secure customer service numbers that are both accessible and memorable, limiting their ability to improve responsiveness and customer satisfaction.

“Easy-to-remember numbers contribute directly to better service quality and smoother customer interaction,” Alaa said. “That ultimately reflects on customer satisfaction and brand perception.”
