Egypt Implements Largest Network of Electric Trains in Africa, ME

Egypt is implementing the longest network of electric railways in the Middle East (ME) and Africa, with a length of up to 2,000 km.

The railway network will be pided into 3 main lines. The first line extends from Matrouh Governorate on the Mediterranean Sea with a length of 660 km. The second line with a length of about 1,100 km, extending from Cairo to Abu Simbel in Aswan through the cities of Luxor and Aswan.

Meanwhile, the length of the third line is 225 km from Qena to Safaga on the Red Sea and passing through Hurghada.

This network connects 60 Egyptian cities with trains that reach speeds of up to 230 km/h, serving 90% of the citizens, and transporting millions of passengers daily, as well as transporting millions of tons of goods annually.

The network will also link Cairo with the emerging economic centers in Upper Egypt.

The fast electric train network consists of express, regional and third goods trains, distributed into 3 main lines with a total length of about 2000 km. The electric network has 60 stations, including 22 express train stations and 38 regional train stations.

The network includes approximately 1,400 km to serve Upper Egypt, and the second line includes Fayoum. Aswan/Abu Simbel has 35 stations, including 9 high-speed trains and 26 regional train stations.

The project is being implemented through an Egyptian-German consortium that includes the international company "Siemens", Orascom, and the Arab Contractors, where the implementation of earth bridges, bridges, and industrial works for the track, as well as stations, fences, and industrial works on roads intersecting with the train track by Egyptian companies.
