Today (Oct. 6) marks the 50th anniversary of the 6th of October Victory. The event presents an opportunity for all Egyptians to honor and express gratitude to the brave veterans and their families for their service and sacrifice in one of the Arab world's longest wars against Israel.
On this day, Egyptians celebrate the history and development of the Egyptian Armed Forces sector.
It is a day to remember and honor the thousands of Egyptian veterans who served on active duty in the Egyptian Armed Forces during the Israeli occupation of the Sinai Peninsula and the Arab involvement in this war from June 5, 1967, to October 6, 1973.
More than 20 million Egyptian veterans are still living today. Some Egyptian universities and schools organize special events for students to participate in classroom activities that focus on the topic of freedom and the unity of Egypt's territory.
Egyptians also celebrate this special day by coming together and thanking their national heroes for bringing them the freedom they enjoy today.
As part of the official celebrations, President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi will give a speech during a ceremony commemorating the 50th anniversary of October victories and the Arab world. Banks, private institutions, and public entities are on holiday today in the country.
In the main provinces, people gather in public squares, many holding small national flags, wearing red and black clothes, and with national flag patterns painted on their faces.
The Unknown Soldier Memorial in Naser City is decorated with flower baskets on the theme of "Viva Egypt," which provides a popular background for snapshots.
The 6th of October War coincided with Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the year in Judaism, in Israel.
