Telecom Egypt and Meta Company, members of the 2Africa submarine cable alliance, announced the success of the first landing of the submarine cable in Egypt, in the city of Ras Ghareb in the Red Sea Governorate, with another landing to take place in the city of Port Said in the Mediterranean at a later time.
The company said in a statement issued on Tuesday that the 2Africa submarine cable will extend to 46 locations in the continents of Africa, Asia and Europe upon completion of the project by 2024, and the participation of Meta and Telecom Egypt in this cable will allow more users around the world to obtain more internet services at the best prices.
In May 2020, the 2Africa submarine cable system and its Pearl extension were announced, ensuring the provision of seamless international connectivity for about 3 billion people representing about 36% of the world's population, as the cable connects the continents of Africa, Europe and Asia.
The 2Africa submarine cable extends 45,000 km, becoming the longest submarine cable system ever implemented. The project contributes to enhancing the ability of Internet-dependent communities to achieve many economic and social benefits by providing more services with high efficiency such as education services, health care and commercial activities. .
Submarine cables contribute to laying the foundations for international internet services, and achieving communication between people in different continents of the world, and they will play a pivotal role in the development of the Middle East and Africa.
Investing in submarine cable systems often contributes to the economic growth of the surrounding communities, which brings economic gains to individuals and companies.
According to the statement, the Research Institute International (RTI) expects the 2Africa submarine cable system to contribute between $26.2 and $36.4 billion to Africa's GDP (in purchasing power terms) within two to three years since commissioning.
The statement indicated that the Port Said landing station will join its counterpart in Ras Ghareb, to be linked through two land tracks that pass along the Suez Canal. The transit service will provide a solution to connect Africa, Asia and Europe through seamless optical pathways using the latest fiber optic technology.
The route will be completed via the Viston marine link of the new Red2Med system owned by Telecom Egypt. This link connects the landing stations in Ras Ghareb, Zaafarana and Suez.
It is noteworthy that the 2Africa alliance includes the Chinese company CMI, Meta company, MTN Global Connect, the French company Orange, stc, Telecom Egypt, Vodafone International, and WIOCC.
