Russian Oil Refinery, Port Hit in Drone Attack amid Intensifying Ukraine Conflict

A series of drone strikes targeted a Russian oil refinery and a strategic port on Saturday, igniting fires and causing injuries, as the Ukraine-Russia conflict enters its fifth year.

The attacks come amid escalating tensions in global energy markets driven by simultaneous crises in the Middle East.

Regional emergency services reported that a fire broke out at unspecified processing units in the Afipsky Oil Refinery, which has a capacity of 180,000 barrels per day (9.1 million tons annually). The fire was later extinguished, and there were no immediate reports of casualties from this site.

In a separate incident, debris from a drone fell in Kavkaz Port near the Kerch Strait, damaging a “technical vessel” and igniting a fire in the dock area. Authorities said three people were hospitalized due to the attack. Kavkaz is a key hub for fuel, grain, and general cargo shipments.

Meanwhile, Ukraine faced one of the largest waves of Russian attacks since the start of 2026, including 430 drones and 68 missiles, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky. Ukrainian air defenses intercepted 58 projectiles, but the strikes resulted in at least four civilian deaths and 15 injuries, primarily in the Kyiv region.

Air raid sirens sounded across Ukraine on Saturday morning, disrupting daily life and prompting temporary suspension of public transport. President Zelensky reiterated the urgent need for additional air defense systems, citing the impact of the Middle East conflict on the availability of international defensive support.

The attacks highlight the ongoing vulnerability of energy infrastructure amid a global context of compounded crises. Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries and ports aim to disrupt fuel supplies to the Russian military and reduce oil revenues that help fund the war.

At the same time, rising tensions in the Middle East, including recent U.S.-Iran confrontations affecting key shipping routes like the Strait of Hormuz, are adding pressure to already fragile global energy markets.

The Afipsky refinery and Kavkaz Port have previously been targets of drone attacks, with the last significant strike on the refinery occurring in January. This pattern underscores the high-risk environment for energy logistics and regional security in both Eastern Europe and the Middle East.
