Chinese President Xi Jinping has announced a substantial military aid package for Africa, totaling one billion yuan (about $150 million ), during the ninth Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) held in Beijing.
Xi highlighted that China's relationship with Africa is currently at its strongest, expressing hopes for further strengthening these ties in the future.
The aid package will include military support, joint military training, and patrol exercises, as China aims to enhance its strategic partnership with African nations.
In addition to defense, Xi pledged to bolster cooperation in critical sectors such as industry, agriculture, infrastructure, trade, and investment. He also emphasized China's commitment to sharing governance expertise with African leaders.
China's focus on fostering a low-carbon economy and promoting green development was another key aspect of Xi's speech.
He reiterated the importance of joint efforts to transition to sustainable energy practices, aligning with global trends towards reducing carbon emissions.
Xi also announced a significant financial commitment to Africa, pledging $50 billion for development projects over the next three years.
This funding is expected to create one million jobs across the continent, further driving economic growth and stability.
In an effort to support Africa's long-term stability, Xi pledged to help improve Africa’s security capabilities, offering assistance in establishing a governance exchange platform.
Additionally, 25 China-Africa research institutes will be developed to foster academic and scientific cooperation.
To support Africa’s technological advancements, China will launch 24 digital projects aimed at spurring the continent’s digital revolution.
Furthermore, China will collaborate with African countries on 30 infrastructure projects under the Belt and Road Initiative, focusing on energy, transportation, and connectivity. These projects are part of a broader effort to enhance Africa’s participation in global trade networks.
In the realm of healthcare, China has committed to combating epidemics in Africa by initiating 20 medical and health projects, demonstrating the country's readiness to assist in the fight against diseases across the continent.
China is Africa’s largest trading partner, with bilateral trade reaching $167.8 billion in the first half of 2024, underscoring the deepening economic ties.
