China has defended its decision to abstain from a recent U.S.-drafted UN Security Council resolution on Gaza, saying the text lacked clarity on critical post-conflict arrangements and failed to uphold key principles central to resolving the Palestinian question.

Asked about the vote during a regular press briefing on November 18, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning said China supports all efforts aimed at achieving a lasting ceasefire, alleviating the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, and launching reconstruction efforts. However, she stressed that the draft resolution did not adequately reflect essential elements of China’s long-standing position.

Mao said the resolution was “vague on key issues” concerning the governance structure in Gaza after the conflict, particularly the principle of “Palestinians governing Palestine” and explicit commitment to a two-state solution. Because of this gap, she said, China chose not to vote in favor.

The spokesperson emphasized that China remains committed to playing a constructive role in efforts to achieve a full, just, and lasting resolution to the Palestinian issue. She reaffirmed Beijing’s support for the Palestinian people’s pursuit of legitimate national rights and stressed that China would continue working toward peace, justice, and an end to the conflict.

China and Russia were the only two Security Council members to abstain on the resolution.
