China has banned the import of sheep, goats and related products from Greece and Romania to prevent the spread of the goat plague outbreak, China Customs Administration data showed.
Goat plague, also known as peste of petite ruminants, was discovered last month for the first time in Greece. The virus does not infect humans, but it is highly contagious among goats and sheep and can cause the death of up to 70% of infected animals.
The ban on Greek imports, issued by the Customs Administration and the Ministry of Agriculture, went into effect on July 26, while the ban on Romanian imports began on August 2, according to the data.
