In a harrowing update from the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), officials have reported that, on average, a child is killed every hour in Gaza amid the ongoing conflict.
The announcement underscores the devastating toll of the violence on the region’s most vulnerable population: children.
UNRWA’s Commissioner-General, Philippe Lazzarini, described the situation as "a catastrophic humanitarian disaster," calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities and unhindered access for humanitarian aid.
"This is not just a crisis; it is a stain on humanity," he said during a press briefing.
The violence, which has surged over recent months, has left Gaza’s infrastructure in ruins, displacing hundreds of thousands of families. Schools, hospitals, and homes have been reduced to rubble, forcing children to live in unimaginable conditions.
According to UNRWA, the majority of the casualties are children under the age of 15, many of whom were killed while seeking shelter in areas thought to be safe. The agency has repeatedly warned that children in Gaza are suffering not only physical harm but also deep psychological trauma.
"These children are growing up in a nightmare. Their homes are gone, their schools are destroyed, and they are losing their friends and family members every day," said Lazzarini.
The conflict has exacerbated an already dire humanitarian situation. UNRWA reports that more than 80% of Gaza’s population now relies on humanitarian aid to survive, with food, water, and medical supplies running dangerously low.
The agency has called on the international community to step up its support, emphasizing the urgent need for funding to provide emergency relief and psychological support to survivors.
Global leaders and humanitarian organizations have echoed UNRWA’s plea for an immediate ceasefire. However, efforts to broker peace have so far failed, with both sides accusing the other of escalating the violence.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres has condemned the loss of civilian lives, stating, "The killing of children is a moral outrage and must stop. All parties must adhere to international humanitarian law and protect civilians, especially children."
The situation in Gaza has sparked protests and demonstrations worldwide, with activists demanding action to protect the region’s children. The hashtag #SaveGazaChildren has trended globally, amplifying calls for an end to the violence.
As the conflict rages on, the death toll continues to rise, leaving families shattered and communities in despair. For the children of Gaza, each passing hour brings a new tragedy, underscoring the urgent need for a resolution to this devastating crisis.
