The Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) confirmed that it does not deal directly with bank customers, and that no personal or bank account-related information is requested by any means of communication.
The CBE warned citizens against mobile phone messages, emails, electronic links from unreliable sources, and phone calls whose owners impersonate unreal qualities and jobs and claim to be employees of the Central Bank or a bank, with the aim of obtaining personal and bank data to seize customer funds.
The Central Bank stressed the need to maintain the confidentiality of data, including the bank card data represented by its number, expiry date, password, verification code and variable password, as well as national number data.
It stressed that banks will not ask their customers to update their data except at the bank's headquarters or through banks' secure electronic applications (for example: Internet banking) and not through any other means of communication.
The Central Bank of Egypt called on citizens dealing with the banking sector not to get behind these attempts to seize their banking information and inform the banks they deal with of these attempts immediately.
