Canada has delivered an emergency air-drop of life-saving humanitarian aid to Gaza, the government announced on Tuesday, amid rising concerns over the deepening humanitarian crisis in the region.
In a joint statement, Foreign Minister Anita Anand and Defence Minister David McGuinty confirmed that the Canadian Armed Forces deployed a CC-130J Hercules aircraft to conduct the air-drop, delivering 21,600 pounds of vital supplies. The mission was carried out in collaboration with Global Affairs Canada.
The operation comes in response to what officials described as unprecedented humanitarian needs in Gaza and severe restrictions on the delivery of aid by land.
According to the statement, humanitarian partners are facing major challenges in providing food, medical supplies, and other critical support due to continued Israeli-imposed access restrictions.
Canada condemned these barriers, calling them a violation of international humanitarian law and urging immediate action to ensure safe and unimpeded humanitarian access.
The Canadian government stressed the urgent need for a substantial scale-up in humanitarian assistance and renewed its calls for open border crossings, fast customs clearances, and long-term visas for aid workers. It also thanked Jordan for its support in facilitating aid deliveries to Gaza.
