The 2025 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to Americans Mary E. Bronko and Fred Ramsdale, and Japanese scientist Shimon Sakaguchi, for their groundbreaking discoveries related to peripheral immunity and immune tolerance.
The announcement, made by the Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, opens this year’s Nobel season.
The award can be shared by up to three laureates for research that is closely related or complementary within the same field.
Last year, the Nobel Prize in Medicine went to Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun, honoring their discovery of microRNA and its critical role in gene regulation.
Traditionally, the Medicine prize kicks off Nobel Week, which continues with awards in Physics, Chemistry, Literature, Peace, and Economics.
The ceremony will take place on December 10, commemorating the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death. This year, each prize is valued at 11 million Swedish kronor (approximately $1.1 million USD).
