Under the patronage of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, Egypt’s Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Abdel Aziz Konsowa, together with Ahmed Zayed, hosted the inaugural ceremony for the Bibliotheca Alexandrina International Award at the Alexandria Library.

The award recognizes outstanding contributions in promoting creativity, innovation, and human well-being.

The first winners are Dr. Hassan Shafik, a British-Egyptian researcher celebrated for sustainable innovation and circular economy solutions, and Mr. Glen Banaguas from the Philippines, recognized for applying science to support marginalized communities and develop sustainable aviation fuel.

The event brought together prominent figures, including former Minister of Education Yousry El-Gamal, renowned writer Mohamed Salmawy, and members of the award’s high committee. It was hosted by Dina El-Mahdy, head of the Library’s podcast unit.

Konsowa emphasized that the prize is more than recognition, it is a commitment to advancing science and technology for human happiness, underlining Egypt’s role as a hub for innovation and research. He highlighted the first edition’s focus on green technologies, reflecting the urgent global need to align technological progress with environmental sustainability, climate action, and energy security, in line with Egypt Vision 2030.

Zayed reflected on the library’s historic legacy as a beacon of knowledge and cultural dialogue, noting that the new library continues this mission in the modern era. The prize embodies the Library’s vision to foster research and innovation that improves human life, transcending geographic and disciplinary boundaries.

Shafik described the honor as a profound recognition of green technology’s role in creating healthier, more sustainable societies. He stressed that innovation is essential for addressing climate challenges, building clean cities, promoting economic growth, and enhancing quality of life.

Banaguas highlighted his “Science for Service” and “Science Diplomacy” initiatives, emphasizing the importance of turning knowledge into practical tools for vulnerable communities, fostering regional and global cooperation, and tackling climate and humanitarian crises. He underlined that the true impact of scientific work lies in inspiring and serving others.

The ceremony also paid tribute to the late Professor Mofid Shehab, former head of the prize’s high committee, honoring his legacy in advancing intellectual and cultural dialogue.

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina International Award aims to strengthen cross-disciplinary innovation, promote cultural pluralism, and advance practical solutions that enhance human well-being. It underscores Egypt’s dedication to nurturing knowledge, creativity, and sustainable development while inspiring future generations of scientists, innovators, and cultural leaders.

This first edition marks the beginning of what the organizers hope will become a lasting international platform for recognizing impactful science and innovation, bridging cultures, and fostering a sustainable future for humanity.
