Inter Milan will be without midfielder Nicolò Barella for at least three matches after he suffered a muscle injury in training, dealing a blow to Simone Inzaghi’s plans during a busy stretch of the season.
Italian reports say Barella was forced to miss the squad’s trip to Germany for Wednesday night’s UEFA Champions League clash against Borussia Dortmund after experiencing muscle discomfort.
Medical tests carried out on Wednesday morning at the Humanitas Institute in Rozzano confirmed a mild strain to the psoas muscle in his right thigh.
The Italy international’s condition will be monitored on a day-to-day basis, but he is not expected to feature in Inter’s upcoming league match against Cremonese or their Coppa Italia fixture versus Torino.
Club staff are targeting his return for the Serie A match against Sassuolo on February 8, after which he is expected to be fully available, including for the high-profile league showdown with Juventus.
The medical assessment was decisive in determining the extent of the injury, which Barella sustained during his most recent training session.
In his absence, Davide Frattesi or Petar Sučić are expected to step in to reinforce Inter’s midfield, starting with the Champions League encounter in Dortmund.
