Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny shared an update on the upcoming Spider-Man spin-off movie "El Muerto".

The project was announced in 2022 at Cinemacon during Sony’s panel.

El Muerto/Juan Carlos was a super-powered wrestler who originally fought Spider-Man in a charity wrestling match in which he nearly unmasked the webslinger before being stung by Spider-Man with a paralyzing poison. After his oppressor El Dorado came to claim his life, he was saved by Spider-Man, after which the two team up to defeat Dorado.

El Muerto would mark the first Latin superhero to get his own movie in the Marvel cinematic universe, coming right after Sony "Madame Web", which marked the first female character from the Spider-Man universe to get her own movie.

El Muerto isn’t as popular as Venom or Kraven the Hunter, however, Sony's rushing to get the project into development had a lot to do with Bad Bunny’s persistence in finding that right superhero property for himself.

In a profile on Bad Bunny in TIME, the artist's publicist revealed that the upcoming spin-off is currently "at a standstill," despite the movie still technically set to release in January of next year.

The magazine reported that when the project was announced, Bad Bunny considered the role of Juan-Carlos Sanchez (El Muerto) "perfect" for him given his history with Wrestlemania, as the character is a wrestler himself. The artist told TIME that his Wrestlemania debut was, in fact, "the best day of [his] life."

However, TIME did report that after pretending to be confused, Bad Bunny revealed that the shooting has not started yet. His publicist confirmed this, first saying that the movie was "at a standstill," before correcting the language to "in development."

The musician added, jokingly, "Maybe they’ll switch me out for Pedro Pascal."

"El Muerto" hits theaters on January 12, 2024.
