The Alexandria Governorate issued a statement in response to what was circulated on social media regarding the spread of pictures of a fisherman holding some small sharks that he caught from the open sea in front of the El-Max area in Alexandria.

In this regard, the experts of the Institute of Marine Sciences and Fisheries in Alexandria reported that the image circulated with one of the fishermen is of a newly born baby shark, which is of the type “Isurus oxyrinchus short-finned mako” and does not represent any danger to the region.

The experts of the Institute Alexandria denied what is being circulated about the presence of small sharks in the El-Max area, whose waters are considered mixed waters, and the presence of the area pumps also prevents sharks entry.

The experts explained that the fisherman caught the baby shark more than 3 km off the shore in an area parallel to the El-Max area.

Experts emphasized that this species does not live in this region, but lives in deep waters, and its presence during this period is natural because it is the mating season for sharks, whether in the Red Sea or the Mediterranean Sea, and there is no need to create panic and confusion by publishing and circulating information and pictures carrying misleading news.

Experts pointed out that there are some types of shark-like fish sold in El-Max markets, and some citizens want to buy them because of their relatively cheap price. "This has been happening for decades in this region and is not a new event," they added.
