Australia has announced that it will provide Ukraine with 49 of its older M1A1 Abrams tanks, following months of requests from Kyiv for additional military support.
Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles confirmed the decision on Thursday.
Marles stated that the Australian government would supply Ukraine with the American-made M1A1 tanks, valued at 245 million Australian dollars (about 163 million USD).
These tanks are part of Australia's older fleet, which the country will soon replace with 75 new-generation M1A2 Abrams tanks.
The move comes as a significant shift from Marles’ earlier stance. In February, the defense minister indicated that sending tanks to Ukraine was not part of the government's agenda.
However, Marles clarified that this new decision is not a reversal of Australia's previous position but a response to evolving circumstances.
This transfer of military equipment represents Australia's ongoing commitment to supporting Ukraine in its defense against Russian aggression.
As the war drags on, Ukraine has continuously sought advanced weaponry to bolster its military capabilities, and Australia's decision to provide these tanks marks a crucial contribution to Kyiv’s efforts.
