Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad revealed, on Thursday, the real reason behind the deepening economic crisis in Syria, and pointed out that the deposits of Syrians withheld in the Lebanese banking financial sector were the main reason.

“The economic problem has another reason that no one talks about, which is the billions of dollars we put in Lebanon’s financial sector, Assad said. “ And when they were blocked, we paid the price.”

Syrian authorities blamed Western sanctions for immense hardship among residents, as the currency’s collapse has led to soaring prices which made people struggle in order to afford food and basic supplies.

“It is easy to always blame the state and the government. Everyone makes mistakes. This is another issue, but the current crisis is not related to the blockade,” Assad stated.“ This has been going on for years; however, it does not mean that it is a good thing.”

He pointed out that the Syrians' deposits in Lebanese banks were estimated at 20 and 42 billion dollars, stating that, "We do not know what the real number is, and this figure for an economy like Syria is terrifying."
