Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit said Tuesday that the recent UN Security Council resolution on ending the war in Gaza should mark “the beginning, not the end” of efforts to improve conditions for Palestinians.
Spokesperson Gamal Roshdy said the resolution underscores global commitment to rebuilding Gaza after what he described as unprecedented destruction, and includes a vital reference to a credible path toward establishing an independent Palestinian state.
Aboul Gheit urged all parties supporting a two-state solution to translate commitments into action that advances Palestinian statehood and brings an end to the Israeli occupation, which he called the root cause of regional instability.
He also voiced hope that the second phase of the League’s 20-point plan would be implemented swiftly, and that the resolution would oblige Israel to allow the entry of humanitarian aid and essential reconstruction materials into Gaza.
