Al-Mashat Commends Fruitful Partnership with UNDP in Many Initiatives

Dr. Rania A. Al-Mashat, Minister of Planning, Economic Development and International Cooperation, met with Mr. Haoliang Xu, UN Under-Secretary-General and UNDP Associate Administrator, in the presence of Mr. Alessandro Fracassetti, UNDP Resident Representative to Egypt, as part of H.E.’s participation in the World Urban Forum (WUF12), hosted by Cairo from 4th to 8th of November, under the patronage and honor of H.E. President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, under the theme "It All Starts at Home: Local Actions for Sustainable Cities and Communities."

At the outset of the meeting, Minister of Planning, Economic Development and International Cooperation welcomed the UN Under-Secretary-General, highlighting Egypt's hosting of the World Urban Forum (WUF), for the first time in Africa in 20 years, which reflects its active role on the international scene, in supporting sustainable development efforts.

H.E. Dr. Rania A. Al-Mashat commended the strong partnership with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), particularly regarding the launch of the Integrated National Financing Strategy, announced during events of the High-Level Week of the United Nations General Assembly, noting that the meeting with the Director of the UNDP in New York showcased the close partnership with Egypt to address sustainable development challenges.

H.E. Dr. Al-Mashat emphasized the government's efforts to support sustainable economic development in Egypt, given the diversity of the Egyptian economy and its multiple production sectors, as well as its focus on human capital development. H.E. also referred to the Human Development Report 2025 and the importance of focusing on qualitative development, expressing hope for future collaboration between the Egyptian government and UNDP on the report.

The two sides also discussed joint efforts to support and empower the private sector, as H.E. Minister Al-Mashat highlighted the cooperation between the Ministry, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), and Istanbul International Center for Private Sector Development (IICPSD), affiliated with UNDP, to develop maps of investors for sustainable development goals (SGDs) to enhance influential investments in key investment opportunity areas. H.E. pointed out that 6 priority sectors had been identified, including infrastructure, renewable resources and alternative energy, food and beverages (agriculture), transport, healthcare, and education, as well as support for South-South cooperation mechanisms.

H.E. Dr. Al-Mashat reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to localizing the SDGs, citing the launch of the first reports on SDG localization at the governorate level in all 27 Egyptian governorates, developed by the Ministry of Planning in partnership with UNDP. These reports are the first of their kind in Egypt.

H.E. Minister Al-Mashat also highlighted Egypt’s success in issuing 3 voluntary local reports for the governorates of Beheira, Fayoum, and Port Said, with support from the Ministry and UNDP.

Mr. Haoliang Xu, Under-Secretary-General and UNDP Associate Administrator, stated , “The partnership between Egypt’s Ministry of Planning, Economic Development, and International Cooperation and UNDP plays a critical role in advancing the country’s sustainable development agenda. At the 12th World Urban Forum (WUF12) in Cairo, we are focused on addressing urban sustainability challenges while supporting Egypt’s priorities in key sectors such as renewable energy, agriculture, healthcare, and entrepreneurship and more,”

He added: “With UNDP’s global perspective, we are committed to aligning our efforts with Egypt’s Vision 2030 and the broader 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, fostering meaningful progress for all.”
