ACWA Power, a Saudi-listed company, in collaboration with China's state-owned PowerChina, has initiated the development of the first green hydrogen project in Uzbekistan.

This groundbreaking project is set to produce 3,000 metric tons of green hydrogen annually and will be powered by a wind farm, according to announcements made on both companies' websites.

PowerChina, the general contractor for the project, stated that this marks the company's first venture into green hydrogen abroad and represents the first green hydrogen project in Central Asia to reach the implementation stage.

The project is of significant importance within the context of China's Belt and Road Initiative.

China has ambitious plans to produce between 100,000 to 200,000 metric tons of green hydrogen annually, a crucial step in reducing carbon emissions in heavy industries such as steel, cement, and fertilizer production.

ACWA Power, with its expertise in electricity generation and desalination plants, has operations spanning across the Gulf region and North Africa.

In September, its chairman, Mohammed Abu Nahyan, signed memoranda of understanding with South China Electric Power Grid and Mingyang Smart Energy to collaborate on clean energy technology, particularly wind turbine production.

Green hydrogen is gaining momentum as a clean energy source that can help reduce carbon emissions and combat climate change.

This project in Uzbekistan reflects the growing global interest in hydrogen as an alternative energy solution.

The collaboration between ACWA Power and PowerChina not only advances the development of green hydrogen technology but also strengthens ties between countries along the Belt and Road Initiative, contributing to international efforts to address climate challenges.
