Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit received Walid Al-Lafi, Libya’s Minister of State for Communication and Political Affairs, on Wednesday during an official visit to the League’s headquarters in Cairo. The meeting focused on the latest political developments in Libya and the challenges facing the political process at this critical stage.
According to Jamal Rushdi, the spokesperson for the Secretary-General, the talks addressed in detail the evolving situation inside Libya, particularly efforts underway to create a consensual environment that would enable transparent, inclusive elections reflecting the will of the Libyan people. Aboul Gheit emphasized the importance of all influential Libyan parties moving toward practical understandings that would reunify state institutions and allow elections to be held as soon as possible, in the national interest.
The Secretary-General reiterated the Arab League’s continued commitment to supporting Libya and accompanying its people toward a political solution based on national ownership and mutual agreement. He expressed the readiness of the League’s General Secretariat to provide any necessary support that respects Libya’s sovereign leadership of its political process while reinforcing the country’s unity and stability.
Aboul Gheit stressed that assisting Libya remains a top priority for the Arab League. He underscored the importance of sustained consultation with Libyan stakeholders and relevant international partners to secure the conditions needed for advancing the political track and safeguarding the aspirations of the Libyan people for stability and state-building.
